Bowel Cancer Screening

Tuesday, 1 June 2021

Bowel cancer is the UK’s fourth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. More than 41,000 people are diagnosed and nearly 16,000 die from bowel cancer each year.

Also known as colorectal cancer, bowel cancer refers to tumours in the part of your gut called the large intestine or large bowel. Most people who get bowel cancer are aged over 60.St Mark’s Hospital delivers the National NHS Bowel  Cancer Screening Programme. In Brent. Currently everyone aged 60 -74 is invited for screening and will be sent a home testing kit every 2 years. This will gradually lower over the next few years so everyone aged 50 -74 will be invited. The screening procedure aims to detect and remove polyps before they can become cancerous and can reduce your risk of getting bowel cancer by half.
